Website accessibility is an important part of providing an inclusive online experience. While automated tools can help identify potential issues, they cannot evaluate every aspect of accessibility or guarantee WCAG compliance. Our accessibility best practices outline the steps we take to support website accessibility, the limitations of automated testing, and additional options to consider when evaluating your website’s accessibility.
How we build your sites
When we build a website, our policy is to follow the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. That includes a standard approach to color contrast, labeling of images, headings and buttons, and descriptive link text. Every Spillover site also includes an Accessibility Statement in the footer. It has a feedback form that lets your customers report any accessibility problem. Each report automatically opens a ticket with our support team. We then let you know about the issue and either fix it or agree the next steps with you.
What the audit covers
Our audits cover the pages we host. They don’t extend to third-party services linked from your site, such as online ordering or reservation platforms. Those providers are responsible for their own accessibility. It’s worth asking them for their accessibility statement or conformance report.
Keeping your site accessible over time
Accessibility isn’t a one-time fix. New content, such as photos, menus, PDFs and promotions, can introduce new issues. Here are your options for staying on top of it:
- Self-monitoring (no cost). Run accessibility checks yourself on a regular basis, and follow the W3C guidelines whenever you add content. We offer a free accessiBe checker on Spillover.com https://spillover.com/accessibility-audit/
- accessiBe widget. This adds an accessibility toolbar that lets visitors with disabilities adjust the site to their needs, for example text size, contrast and spacing. It also provides ongoing automated scanning with monthly audit reports, so new issues are flagged between our reviews. The accessiBe plan also includes a litigation support package if you receive an accessibility-related demand letter or claim. It currently costs $55 per month per site through Spillover. Please note that, like any automated tool, the widget doesn’t guarantee compliance. We see it as an added layer of support and monitoring, not a substitute for good content practices.
- Independent manual audit (greatest peace of mind). If you want the highest level of assurance, we recommend a manual audit by an independent accessibility specialist. They test the site the way people with disabilities actually use it, including with screen readers and keyboard-only navigation. We’re happy to work with any auditor you choose and fix whatever they find. If your concern is legal exposure, we’d also suggest a short conversation with your own attorney about your specific situation.
